Schalke hits transfer market as Bayern and Dortmund quiet (The Associated Press)

While Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund made no last-minute moves, Bundesliga rival Schalke and other clubs signed new players as the transfer deadline expired Wednesday with record spending and Hamburger SV landing Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Douglas Santos. The five-year deal was signed shortly before the German transfer deadline ran out at 1600 GMT. Douglas Santos, a left back, last played for Atletico Mineiro and was in Brazil's lineup that beat Germany in the Olympic final.
