Conte's protege brings Spartak back on top in Russia (The Associated Press)

In this photo made on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016 Spartak's head coach Massimo Carrera, of Italy, watches his team prior to the national championship soccer match between Spartak Moscow and CSKA in Moscow, Russia. Since being promoted to Spartak head coach, Carrera's fortunes are on the rise as he's turned Spartak into the Russian league leader in the process beating arch-rival CSKA 3-1. In contrast the fortunes of CSKA's Leonid Slutsky continue to plummet and now he's under pressure at CSKA. (AP Photo/Ivan Sekretarev)

When Antonio Conte took over at Chelsea, his longtime assistant seemed to have been cast aside. After following Conte through his time with Juventus and Italy - including a spell in charge of Juventus when Conte was banned for failing to report match-fixing - Massimo Carrera was stranded, and took a relatively obscure post as assistant coach with Spartak Moscow. Four months later, however, Carrera is on the rise.
