Sunderland beats Watford to move out of bottom of table (The Associated Press)
Sunderland lifted themselves off the foot of the Premier League table and into 18th position thanks to a 1-0 victory over Watford on Saturday at the Stadium of Light, with Patrick van Aanholt's goal the difference. The visitors were the better team in the first period, with Jordan Pickford forced into a fine early save from Nordin Amrabat's well-struck volley, while Odion Ighalo missed a decent chance as he failed to connect properly at the near post from a left-wing cross. Jose Holebas somehow contrived to send a free header wide of the far post as he rose unmarked from a corner and the first 45 minutes ended all square, with the Black Cats coming out fast at the start of the second half.
