Italy goalkeeper Buffon to play his 1,000th match (The Associated Press)

Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon will mark his 1,000th appearance as a professional in the World Cup qualifier against Albania on Friday. The goalkeeper has played for Italy for more than 19 years, having made his debut at 19 on Oct. 29, 1997. Buffon is expected to retire after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
