The cousin-in-law of Alan Pulido has been detained for his role in allegedly masterminding the kidnapping of the Mexican soccer player, authorities in northern Mexico said on Tuesday. Pulido, a Mexico national team striker, was kidnapped after leaving a party on Saturday night, but managed to escape by punching a guard, snatching a cell phone, and calling for help from the house where he was held in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas. Police had already detained a captor, one of at least four involved, who belonged to a criminal gang, authorities said on Monday.

The USSF's response was contained in a position statement sent Tuesday to EEOC's Chicago office by a law firm representing the federation.

The San Jose Sharks insist they'll be better in Game 2 on Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins than they were in the opener, when the Western Conference champions wobbled out of the gate and never really had control in a 3-2 loss that spoiled the club's debut in the NHL's marquee event after a quarter century wait. Or, maybe the Sharks allowed themselves to briefly get caught up in the moment. ''The home team played a better game than us,'' San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said.

Sidney Crosby does not have an off switch. If there was one, Patric Hornqvist believes he would have found it by now. Not once over the last two years while playing alongside one of the NHL's most popular players has Hornqvist seen an exasperated sigh, a roll of the eyes or so much as a smirk from the superstar who has dutifully served as one of the faces from the league from the moment the Pittsburgh Penguins drafted him No. 1 overall in 2005 and he became tasked with restoring the languishing franchise to glory.

Lombardi wants US World Cup team to win like it's 1996 (Yahoo Sports)

When Dean Lombardi put together the United States roster for the return of the World Cup of Hockey, one model that attracted his attention was a team from 20 years ago. Lombardi and USA Hockey finalized the 23-man roster Friday, and the result was a gritty bunch that will very much fit coach John Tortorella's personality. Instead of taking pure skill in the form of forwards Phil Kessel and Paul Stastny and defensemen Cam Fowler and Kevin Shattenkirk, the U.S. went with grinders Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky up front and two-way players Jack Johnson and Erik Johnson on the blue line.

AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo was left out of Italy's squad for the European Championship on Tuesday after failing to recover from injury in time, but fellow midfielder Thiago Motta was judged fit enough to be included in the 23-man squad. There were already question marks over Montolivo's fitness and the 31-year-old pulled up during a training session Sunday with a calf strain. It is another bout of bad luck for Montolivo, who missed out on the 2014 World Cup after breaking his leg during the final warm-up match before the tournament.

A critical 4-2 home win over rival Vancouver was followed by Saturday's 1-1 draw in Chicago, where the Timbers withstood the Fire's 17-8 shot advantage to earn another needed point.

Hooliganism is making a comeback, and the timing could be bad with four high-risk matches in the first week of the European Championship in a country where the police force is already under huge strain. Police forces in France have been stretched since last November's deadly terror attacks that killed 130 people. At the French Cup final, fans managed to sneak flares and objects into the Stade de France, despite a two-meter high security wall and triple security checks, while others tried to invade the pitch, raising serious concern ahead of Euro 2016, where the opening match between France and Romania takes place on June 10.

There were plenty of steps needed before that could happen. But come Monday night, May 30, at the start of Game 1, Martin will be matched up against players like Crosby and Evgeni Malkin after spending the past five seasons as their teammate. Back when the playoffs started nearly seven weeks ago, San Jose Sharks defenseman Paul Martin wondered what it would be like to play his old teammates in Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup Final. There were plenty of steps needed before that could happen considering the Sharks had never made it that far in their entire history and the Penguins hadn't been to the final in seven years. ''Once the puck drops, it's all business, but obviously the relationship with some of the guys that have been there, for five years with some of their guys,'' Martin said.

Ronaldo cited tiredness for his underwhelming display in the final, the last game of another gruelling season in which he played 48 competitive games and scored 51 goals, the sixth straight season in which he has netted over 50 times.
