G Anderson, cancer-stricken wife inspire Senators (Yahoo Sports)

The Ottawa Senators will try to build on one of the most emotional victories in franchise history when they play the first of 10 November home games on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes at Canadian Tire Centre. Anderson left the team to be with Nicholle after shutting out the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 25 in the first of a three-game road trip to western Canada. When the Senators lost backup goalie Andrew Hammond to a groin injury on Oct. 28 in Calgary, Nicholle urged her husband to rejoin the team.

Injury-riddled Wild look to complete sweep of Sabres (Yahoo Sports)

No NHL team has been better than the Minnesota Wild when playing short-handed this season. Through their first nine games, the Central Division-leading Wild have allowed just one power-play goal, which is best in the league. On Monday, Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau led a practice with just 14 healthy skaters, and general manager Chuck Fletcher may need to perform some salary cap gymnastics to have 18 skaters in uniform to face the Sabres.

Nine-game NHL tryouts create uncertainty for young players (Yahoo Sports)

Dylan Strome is living his NHL dream playing for the Arizona Coyotes, staying in a hotel and avoiding the harsh Pennsylvania winter he endured the past three years playing for the Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters. Strome was the No. 3 overall pick in 2015 and he is in hockey's version of purgatory: At 19, he is eligible to be sent back to the juniors without burning a year of his contract as long as he doesn't play 10 games. NHL teams, however, get the chance to test-run some of their top young prospects before committing to them for a full season.

Bony brace helps Stoke City win third straight (The Associated Press)

Two goals from Wilfried Bony and an own goal from Alfie Mawson saw Stoke City surge away from the bottom end of the table with a 3-1 win over Swansea City on Monday at the bet365 Stadium. Wayne Routledge scored Swansea's solitary goal, but it's still no win for Bob Bradley and no wins for the club in any competition since August 23. It could have been so much more for Stoke (3-3-4), who struck the post three times in the first half, but Mark Hughes will be happy with how his side performed and the turnaround they've made since being at the bottom five games in.

Torino surrendered an early advantage in a 2-2 draw at Udinese on Monday that left the Granata in eighth place, four points below the Europa League spots, and on a three-game winless streak. ''Torino has got to understand that it only takes a split second to go from fourth to 10th place,'' said Torino manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, who was sent off in the final minutes for protests.

NYCFC (15-10-9) finished one point ahead of TFC (14-9-11) in the standings, which meant Toronto had to play the Philadelphia Union Wednesday to advance to the next round.

After a tense first half, Juventus broke the deadlock in the 50th when Napoli failed to defend a Miralem Pjanic corner, and Leonardo Bonucci volleyed in from close range. Its lead lasted just four minutes before Jose Callejon beat the offside trap to volley in Lorenzo Insigne's pass to the far post.

Jose Mourinho watched from the stands in the second half as Manchester United endured a goalless draw in the English Premier League on Saturday, with goalkeeper Tom Heaton helping Burnley snatch a point against his former club. United bounced back from a humiliating defeat at Chelsea with an English League Cup derby win against Manchester City midweek, but hopes of a follow-up victory in the league were thwarted by Heaton, a United academy graduate. Heaton left United six years ago without a first-team appearance to his name and, now 30, returned to haunt United on Saturday, producing a stunning display in the Burnley goal as a pulsating match ended 0-0.

Watford, 2-2-0 in the last four, currently sit a surprising seventh in the Premier League table. In the 83rd minute, Watford substitute Daryl Janmaat played in a speculative low cross from the right that flicked off the boot of Roberto Pereyra and onto Dawson's thigh, which diverted the ball into the top corner of the net.
